In the Home of Mrs. Mary Lee Read
8/11/43: Excited, who’s excited? Not me, oh no. Darling, - what do you think; - I have just got the most wonderful place for us. Of all the thousands of apartments & homes in Denver, I have been lucky in finding the one which I very likely would have chosen if I’d had a complete choice. It is in the home of a Mrs. Mary Lee Read, & the enclosed folder tells you who she is. Don’t lose it, as it’s my receipt for a payment on the rent. It is a lovely home and she is a lovely person. She took me in just like a son when I got down to talk to her. She has a two room apartment with bath, one room a nice big room, the other a large screened & windowed porch on the “away from the street side” of the house, where there is a large double bed in it, in case you would like to lie down in there, afternoons, or something. The porch will make a fine sleeping place as it’s on the 2nd floor. And she was so very pleased that I happened to get her address from Special Services, since we both (you & I) like music so much. She has one other boarder, also an organist – a 19 year old fellow who has just been discharged from the Navy due to loss of health. He was in the Casablanca battle. Now she has got him a job playing in a Denver restaurant. She has a Steinway grand piano in her living room, & you and I are to consider it as our own. She wants you to feel at ease to come down there & “visit” with her, & when she is out we can have guests in her living room. She has invited me to a musicale at a friend’s house on Saturday night. Then after you are here, she will give a party for us, so she says. She is very much “in the swim” here in Denver, & I know you will enjoy being here all the more because of the nice place.
Oh yes, besides the apartment, for $5.00 more a month, we can have full kitchen privileges – breakfasts & all you want to cook!! Pantry, refrigerator, etc., & I’m sure there’s a place for you to do washing you want. The house is old fashioned, large, & in a nice residential section. Bathroom is large, the old-fashioned kind. Hot water from a hot water heater 24 hours a day. The present occupants will be out on Sunday so I’ll bring my things in Monday nite, & get things set for you for Tuesday AM. I’ll sleep there Monday nite, & will have the love-birds singing, soft music playing, & all the rest when you get there. Oh, it is going to be wonderful. And I didn’t have to pay rent at all in advance. It’ll be $40 a month, plus the 5$ for kitchen if we want it. It is 11 blocks from town, easy bus reach, & only a few minutes’ walk. Also easy bus & trolley for me out here to the field. I’m so happy I could shout.
